Founded by arduous community leader, Sonia Gutierrez, the Carlos Rosario School has been serving the diverse adult immigrant community of Washington, DC for almost half a century. The School became the first adult charter school in the nation in 1998, and has been lead by Allison R. Kokkoros for the last five years. During her leadership, the School has grown to serve more than 2,500 students annually, expanded its services and programs through innovation and excellence. Some of those include the creation of the Construye DC+ Pre-Apprenticeship Program, the expansion of scholarships for college-bound graduates, and mechanisms to serve the community outside of the boundaries of the District of Columbia.
Geovanny Vicente, featured in the story, came to the United States five years ago. Geovanny learned English at the School, and then received a scholarship to continue his education at The George Washington University. “My favorite thing about teaching is that you can make a lasting impact in lives” said Geovanny.
